Another match, another record for Arsenal’s teenage sensation Max Dowman. The 15-year-old winger became the youngest player ever to start a match for Arsenal, achieving the feat at just 15 years and 302 days old during the Gunners’ EFL Cup victory over Brighton on Wednesday.
15-Year-Old Max Dowman Makes History in Arsenal’s EFL Cup Win Over Brighton
Dowman had already made headlines earlier this season by becoming the second-youngest player to feature for Arsenal and in the Premier League, behind team-mate Ethan Nwaneri.
Now, he has added another milestone to his name with a confident display that left fans and his manager Mikel Arteta impressed.
Arteta made ten changes to the side that defeated Crystal Palace at the weekend, handing full debuts to Dowman and 17-year-old Andre Harriman-Annous.
Despite their youth, both players played key roles in the 3-1 win that secured Arsenal’s place in the quarter-finals.
“A tiny smile, that’s what you get with him,” Arteta said when asked how Dowman reacted when he heard he was starting.
“For him everything is natural, for him everything is OK. It’s the way he plays and that’s the secret, that he doesn’t make a big fuss of it.
“He just does what he does best, which is to play football. To play football with a lot of courage and determination and today again, he has shown some incredible skill, some capacity to run past players at that level in the Premier League at 15. It’s definitely something special.”
Dowman’s confidence was evident on the pitch. He completed the most dribbles (five), won the most fouls (four), and came out on top in the most duels (nine) of any player during the match.
One standout moment came when his dazzling footwork left Brighton defender Diego Gomez struggling to keep up.
The youngster has been training with Arsenal’s senior squad since he was 14 and impressed during the club’s pre-season tour.
Arteta praised his maturity but also urged caution, noting the importance of managing his rapid rise.
Dowman could soon make even more history — if he appears in the Champions League before his next birthday, he would become the youngest player to feature in the competition.
For now, Arsenal fans can celebrate another shining product from their academy as Dowman continues to make his mark on the big stage.
