Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Gabriel Heinze, the former Manchester United and Argentina defender, to Mikel Arteta’s first-team coaching staff ahead of the 2025‑26 season.
Manchester United legend joins Arsenal coaching team
This move fills the void left by Carlos Cuesta, who recently departed to become manager of Parma in Serie A. At 47, Heinze brings a wealth of playing and managerial experience to the Emirates.
The Argentine and Arteta share history from their time together at Paris Saint‑Germain in the 2001–02 campaign, and the pair recently reunited when Heinze attended Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final at the Emirates.
He spent three years in the Premier League (2004–07) with Manchester United, making 83 appearances and winning the 2006–07 Premier League before moving on to Real Madrid.
Since retiring in 2014, Heinze has held managerial roles at Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, Velez Sarsfield, MLS side Atlanta United, and most recently Newell’s Old Boys, where he managed 50 games before leaving in late 2023.
While his coaching tenure has been described as a mixed journey at one point even “hell every day” by one former Atlanta player it has undoubtedly shaped his tactical edge and fiery presence.
Arteta’s coaching nucleus at Arsenal comprises Albert Stuivenberg, Nico Jover, Miguel Molina, and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana.
Heinze’s arrival adds a hard-nosed defender’s mindset and tactical discipline to the group, potentially benefiting Arsenal’s backline and mentality during high-stakes matches.
Cuesta’s departure marks the first voluntary exit from Arteta’s core staff since 2020, and his move underscores Arteta’s philosophy of encouraging staff development.
Arteta’s decision to add Heinze highlights his commitment to strengthening the team’s defensive intellect and mental resilience.
The Argentine’s passion and Premier League pedigree promise to enrich Arsenal’s coaching setup.
