In a recent interview on talkSPORT, pundit Alan Brazil made a bold statement, suggesting that Arsenal should consider parting ways with midfielders Thomas Partey and Jorginho if they are serious about winning the Premier League.

His comments come in the wake of Arsenal’s second consecutive defeat at the San Siro, where they lost to Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Hakan Calhanoglu.

This result means Arsenal have managed just one victory in their last five matches since the October international break.

Brazil, known for his straightforward opinions, pointed to the ageing midfield duo as a significant factor in Arsenal’s recent struggles.

Partey, who played the full 90 minutes against Inter, and Jorginho, who was an unused substitute, have been regulars in Mikel Arteta’s squad despite being in the latter stages of their careers.

Brazil argued that their combined weekly wage of £310,000 is not justified by their current performance levels.

“Mark mentioned two players there, Ray [Parlour], that I personally would get rid of—Jorginho and Partey. They’d be gone for me. I don’t think they’re good enough to win the Premier League,” Brazil said on his radio show.

Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid for £45 million in September 2020, has made 129 appearances for the Gunners but has been plagued by injuries throughout his tenure.

His fitness issues have limited his impact on the team, despite being an integral part of Arteta’s side when fit.

On the other hand, Jorginho arrived from Chelsea in January 2023 for £12 million and has played a more sporadic role, making just 59 appearances in an Arsenal shirt.

He signed a one-year contract extension this summer but has started only two Premier League games this season.

Brazil’s criticism comes at a crucial time for Arsenal, who are currently struggling to find consistency and secure major silverware.

The pundit believes that reducing their reliance on Partey and Jorginho and bringing in fresh, younger talent is essential for the club’s success.

As both players’ contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, it appears likely that Arsenal may take Brazil’s advice into consideration.

The North London club will need to address their midfield concerns if they are to turn their fortunes around and mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.

With the transfer window approaching, it remains to be seen how Arteta will reshape his squad to achieve their ambitious goals.
