Andy Townsend slams Arsenal defender

Former Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend has told Freddie Ljungberg that Sokratis Papastathopoulos, defender at Arsenal, is not good enough to qualify for the Premier League teams.

“Sokratis is nowhere near good enough,” he said. “I don’t think he would get into any Premier League side.”

“With Arsenal you will think ‘I can win games with these players but I’ve got to sort out a team’.

“You will never stop Sokratis making mistakes. If you rely on him you will be changing manager every six months.”

Last week former Arsenal manager Unai Emery was sacked for having no wins from his team for 7 games – making it the worst period in the club’s history. Gary Neville, a former Manchester United player, also agrees in stating that the poor performance is probably due to recruiting players like Sokratis.

“It has been messy, let’s be clear about this, these defenders like [Shkodran] Mustafi, Sokratis and [David] Luiz are uncoachable,” he said.

“I don’t know who has been responsible for recruitment over the last few years, but if I was on the board at Arsenal I would be giving them a right rocketing.”

“There’s no way Emery is telling Luiz to step up two, three times to catch a player offside, or even some of the hideous things you see from other defenders,” he continued.
