Porto has reached an agreement to loan midfielder Fabio Vieira from Arsenal back to the team. Vieira signed a contract with Arsenal through 2027, having left the 30-time Portuguese champions in July 2022 for a reported €40 million (£34.26 million). Despite making 22 Premier League appearances in his rookie campaign, the Portugal youth international has had difficulty becoming a fixture in the first squad.
At Arsenal, Vieira has been relegated to the role of backup player with little playing time. Due to his hectic schedule completing his transfer to his previous club, the midfielder was not included in Arsenal’s squad for their match against Wolves on opening day and is predicted to miss this weekend’s game against Aston Villa as well.
Due to his restricted playing time, the player has not had the significant impact that the Gunners had hoped from him when he signed on.
Arsenal midfielder expected in Portugal to complete move on Tuesday
The attacking midfielder was healthy for much of the 2023–24 season, although he only played in 16 games for the first team, and he did not even log more than 500 minutes. Vieira is not expected to play at all for Arsenal in the upcoming campaign, as Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad is set to join the team shortly and Ethan Nwaneri is starting to make an impression.
Although Mikel Arteta, a former Portuguese youth international, can play a variety of positions in the middle of the park, the management of Arsenal cannot promise him playing time. To ensure that he plays regularly in the first team, the North London club has been trying to send him out on a temporary basis.
