Arsenal are now considered one of the frontrunners for the signing of a new forward target after missing out on Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané, who has signed a new contract with the Bundesliga club.

Sané and Arsenal are reportedly in new negotiations over a possible move to the Emirates Stadium, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany earlier this week. However, the former Man City player seems more likely to turn down Mikel Arteta.

The 29-year-old was scheduled to go on a Bosman agreement after June 30th, but he has wowed with a number of outstanding displays for Bayern in recent weeks. He is currently moving closer to agreeing to new terms at the Allianz Arena, though.

According to Plettenberg, Arsenal’s hopes of acquiring a new right-winger this summer are doomed, as Bayern has formally extended their contract offer to Sane and all parties are currently attempting to come to an agreement.

Arsenal now among favourites to sign £39m forward

According to Sky Germany, Arsenal had “concrete talks” with Sane’s team. Sané will be a free agent in the summer, and it made sense to sign a player who has demonstrated his abilities and is still at the top of his game without having to pay a transfer fee. However, following a number of concessions, Sané is now expected to sign a contract extension in Munich, according to the most recent information from Sky Germany.

According to Sky Germany, Sané has been extended by Bayern until the summer of 2028, but the deal would result in a hefty pay cut. The German international presently makes €20 million (£17.2m/$22.3m) with the Bavarian, but if he satisfies his performance standards, his pay would drop to between €10m (£9m/$11m) and around €15m (£13m/$17m).

Despite the pay, the report also implies that Sané is not interested in returning to the Premier League this summer and is willing to stay at Bayern past this summer.
