In the summer, Arsenal is ‘ready to move’ to acquire Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio
The Serbian midfielder’s transfer to the Premier League has long been rumoured, with Manchester United frequently mentioned as a potential destination. However, Lazio has previously requested more than €100 million for Milinkovic-Savic, and negotiations have never advanced as a result of that high asking price.
The 28-year-contract old’s expires in the summer of 2024, but there is more rumour that he might be permitted to leave for a much lower price. The Serie A team has offered extension offers, which Milinkovic-Savic has rejected. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), both the player and the club have now admitted that a transfer may be the only option left.
In the summer, “all roads point to a sale,” with Lazio reportedly asking for €50 million, although the report claims Milinkovic-agents Savic’s are “pushing” for him to leave for as little as €35 million. Arsenal and Juventus allegedly have their hands on the transfer market and are prepared to move. Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, who thought the Gunners “missed a trick” by not signing Milinkovic-Savic last summer, would love to see the player transfer to the Emirates.
In his Daily Star column from July of last year, Merson stated: “Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is the man I would choose. Milinkovic-Savic is a beautiful athlete in my opinion. a performer of the highest calibre. “Based on how he performed for Lazio last season, in my opinion, he is the greatest midfielder in Italy. I’m aware that Manchester United has previously been linked with him, but I don’t understand why more teams aren’t waiting in line to sign the Serbian.
In 24 Serie A starts this season, Milinkovic-Savic has eight assists and four goals. He could be the perfect replacement for Granit Xhaka in Arteta’s midfield. After only one season in Europe’s premier league, the Serbian is rumoured to want to join a Champions League team.
