Mateo Retegui has reportedly prompted Arsenal to “make contact” with Atalanta. Due to Kai Havertz’s long-term injury sustained during their warm-weather training camp in Dubai, the Gunners’ striker situation is looking bad. The Germans, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli will all miss the remainder of the season due to a chronic issue.
Arsenal still feels internally that they made the right choice in not squandering their summer budget on a “panic signing” in January, but manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that the injury crisis may force him to make some odd personnel choices.
Troy Deeney has accused Arteta of being “scared” about acquiring a “proper No.9” because attackers are frequently unpredictable and unruly, but it is highly anticipated that the North London powerhouses will acquire a well-known center-forward this summer.
Arsenal have targeted Atalanta Striker for Summer
Retegui is the epitome of the contemporary striker, combining skill and physicality. His remarkable timing and movement make him a deadly player inside the box, creating scoring opportunities from half-chances. He is unpredictable due to his ability to score with both his head and feet.
In his first 23 games of the Serie A 2024–2025 season, Retegui has scored 20 goals. He has scored 1.3 goals per 90 minutes overall. Retegui also has a 23 goal-to-assist ratio during the current campaign. In 90 minutes, his goal involvement is equivalent to 1.5. 0.99 is his non-penalty xG per 90 minutes.
This prolific striker might be acquired by the Gunners for €60 million. His price will therefore undoubtedly be lower than those of the other strikers the club is linked to. Thus, it is imperative that the Gunners try to sign Retegui. Still unknown, though, is if the Serie A team will let their top scorer depart during the summer transfer window.
In the summer, Retegui’s talents are also being sought after by Manchester United. They also require Rasmus Hojlund’s substitute or alternative. In order to recruit the Atalanta star striker, the Gunners will undoubtedly have competition.
