Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on Norwich City’s Ben Godfrey.
Reputable BBC journalist, David Ornstein has reported on Arsenal’s intentions to sign the 21-year-old.
Currently the Gunners are not plotting an immediate move but are aware of rival interests from Tottenham Hotspur, Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Lyonnais. Arsenal scouts have been seen monitoring Goodfrey since the start of the year.
Godfrey is highly rated at Norwich. Many believe he is set up for a grand future in English football and clubs will have to pay a hefty price to get him. The Cannaries are valuing him at £50m and it could hold after the defender’s first season in the Premier League.
They have seen Harry Maguire move to Manchester United for £85m and also Adam Webster get picked out of the Championship for £20m. In keeping with the current times, Norwich believes they can a premium rate for Goodfrey.
This is obviously a problem for Arsenal given how they spent nearly £150m last summer. But they have also come to an understanding how important it is to reinforce their defence line. The Gunners continue to get drubbed down by opposing teams due to their feeble backline, evidence of that was last night in the 2-2 draw against Standard Liege.
The David Luiz experiment has not worked thus far and it will be very difficult to improve without able bodies in front of their goal line. However, many would also argue Arsenal’s deficiencies stem from a lack of proper coaching. With a proper manager in charge, the Gunners could return to their old ways.
