Arsenal were in remarkable form when they got their best League Cup win over Leeds United back in 1979. It was the Lillywhites’ most embarrassing defeat in the competition.
It was highly unanticipated result since only a week earlier both the sides had drawn the first leg 1-1 at Yorkshire. The First Division fixture a few days later had also ended 1-1 at Elland Road.
Brady, Graham Rix and Sammy Nelson could not be caught on the left flank while John Hollins dictated the tempo of the game from the midfield. Forwards, Frank Stapleton and Alan Sunderland could not be stopped by the opposition defence.
The following season Arsenal collected a 5-0 victory over the Lillywhites and that too at Elland Road in a League game. Unfortunately, for Leeds, this was the onset of their own downfall from the very top of English football. They ended up getting relegated in 1982.
