The 30-year-old’s purchase was highly requested by new boss, Unai Emery right upon his introduction to the Gunners managerial post but the move never materialised. 6 months into the Premier League season, Emery might be contemplating on more additions to the creative aspect of the pitch.
Banega might be a veteran but still is at the prime of his footballing career. He has started the 2018/19 season in blistering form, scoring 8 goals and setting up 5 assists in 28 games for the White and Reds.
He already has 65 caps for Argentina and was seen providing Lionel Messi and assist in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Banega is a remarkable midfield talent who can operate from deep as well as the number ten role.
He spent a year with Inter Milan and played his early days with other La Liga outfits, Valencia and Atletico Madrid. The Argentine can serve as a replacement for the departing Aaron Ramsey, who notably has struggled to fit into Emery’s system.
Ramsey’s exit from the Emirates is close to being confirmed as numerous clubs approach him with pre-contractual offers.
However, it will also be fair to say that Arsenal are not exactly lacking in the central midfield department. With last summer additions of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, Emery has more than enough to cover Ramsey’s spot.
The Spanish head coach should be looking into the transfers of out-right wingers and centre-backs.
