The German defender has not started a single game for Arsenal this season and he clearly does not have a place in Unai Emery’s plans for the season. Gunners fans are happy to show him the door but his past season performances has scared off any potential suitors from buying him out.
Roma are still interested in acquiring him on a temporary basis. They also want a buy-back option of around £23m, which would be £12m lesser than what Arsenal originally paid for him.
In hindsight, it would not be a total loss if Emery can manage to sell Mustafi even if it’s at a loss. Getting him off the club’s books will be a huge plus and the recuperated fee can be used to partly balance out this summer’s spending.
Arsenal have suitable replaced Laurent Koscielny with the immediate addition of David Luiz. They have also secured the future by acquiring French youth international, William Saliba. Rob Holding is about to mark his return to the first team and Konstantinos Mavropanos is a promising piece as well.
Sending Mustafi out makes sense on all fronts.
