The Japanese international’s time at the Emirates is coming to an early end as Takehiro Tomiyasu is scheduled to depart Arsenal after the club and the player mutually decided to conclude his contract.

The defender barely played six minutes of football last season due to injury concerns; thus, the Gunners are expected to let him go, according to BBC’s Sami Mokbel. The 26-year-old Tomiyasu had a deal with the Gunners through 2026 with a 12-month option, but talks between the club, the player, and his representation resulted in an early settlement.

With a return to full fitness expected in the next four to five months, the decision was made while Tomiyasu is still recovering from knee surgery. The Japan international joined Arsenal from Bologna in the summer of 2021 and immediately made a name for himself in Mikel Arteta’s defense as a dependable and adaptable player.

Being able to play both right and center back, Tomiyasu gained recognition for his reliable performances and ability to step in when other players were sidelined due to injury.

Takehiro Tomiyasu to leave Arsenal

Arteta responded, “That’s what we have to try, and we try to do and we are constantly trying to do, but being a foreign person, you don’t have your family here, no relatives, you are on your own and you are on the sidelines for many, many months [it’s tough],” when asked in February what Arsenal could do to help Tomiyasu after his knee surgery.

“You know, football is his life, especially for him. It’s quite difficult when you comprehend what he does during the day, such as getting ready for the next day and staying in peak physical condition, and when injuries prevent you from playing and fulfilling your professional goals.

“Hopefully, he is aware that we are all here and have been attempting to assist him, but it’s difficult and he must endure that and many more moments, as I have experienced firsthand how isolating the process can be.”
