Arsenal have agreed a deal to bring in former Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer, with the French shot-stopper now set to undergo a medical before completing his move to the Emirates Stadium.
The 26-year-old arrives as a free agent after his contract at Elland Road expired at the end of last month.
According to The Athletic, the Gunners have finalised arrangements to secure Meslier’s signature, making him their first new arrival of the summer transfer window.
Meslier spent seven seasons at Leeds United, making 215 appearances for the club.
However, his final campaign proved frustrating as he failed to make a single first-team appearance, having fallen down the pecking order under manager Daniel Farke.
Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri were preferred ahead of the Frenchman, and Leeds ultimately decided against offering him a contract extension.
At Arsenal, Meslier will initially slot in as third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The move is not directly related to any uncertainty surrounding Kepa’s future, but rather aims to provide greater depth in the goalkeeping department.
More significantly, Meslier’s arrival could pave the way for young England Under-21 goalkeeper Tommy Setford to depart on loan.
The 20-year-old has made only two senior appearances for Arsenal, and the club believes a temporary move away would benefit his development.
Meslier and his representatives were reportedly at Arsenal’s training centre in Hertfordshire on Tuesday to finalise the finer details of the move and undergo his medical examination.
Once completed, the two-time Championship winner will officially join the Premier League champions.
While the signing may not generate the same excitement as a marquee attacking arrival, it represents a shrewd piece of business for a player available at no cost.
Arsenal continue to pursue other targets, including Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, but Meslier’s arrival marks the beginning of their summer activity as they prepare to defend their Premier League title
