The 18-year-old Danish goalkeeper Lucas Nygaard has been signed by Arsenal, making him their first summer transfer of 2024. Former FC Nordsjaelland player and Denmark youth international Lucas Martin Nygaard signed a free agency contract with the Gunners after making an impression during a trial period.
Lucas Nygaard told Arsenal.com, “I’m really happy to finally be here.” “As everyone is aware, Arsenal is a major league football team, so when my father informed me that there was interest and I would be coming here for a trial, I was overjoyed.”
Nygaard’s arrival coincides with a possible turnover in Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation, as Aaron Ramsdale is rumoured to be leaving after spending a season on the bench and does not intend to return, and David Raya has joined on a permanent basis from Brentford.
Arsenal confirms summer transfer as key reason behind move
Nygaard intends to eventually break into the senior squad, but for now, he will be training with Arsenal’s academy teams in the upcoming season. The teenager disclosed that other clubs were showing interest in him, but he decided for Arsenal for a particular reason.
According to Nygaard, he is a modern goalkeeper who prefers to play out from the back with the ball at his feet. With David Raya emerging as the team’s top goalkeeper in the previous campaign, this style of play fits with manager Mikel Arteta’s expectations for his Arsenal goalkeepers.
Lasse Stensgaard, the coach of his national team, called him a “real winner,” praising both his work ethic and potential.
