Emiliano Martinez has rejected a new Arsenal contract at the back of interest from Aston Villa, as per reports.
The Gunners have rejected two bids from Dean Smith’s side and are open to listening to a third.
What Aston Villa have going for them is the promise of a starting spot. Martinez has still not been guaranteed the same over Bernd Leno at the Emirates. He took the chance to shine when Leno went off injured in a Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Martinez came on to perform brilliantly and saw out Arsenal’s campaign as FA Cup winners. He also manned the goal through a penalty shootout win over Liverpool in the Community Shield. Many fans are behind him getting the number one shirt due to the composure and maturity he showed in goal.
The Argentine looks natural in between the posts and not like someone who deserves to be a backup. He feels like he has proven himself to Arsenal enough to snatch up the starting role. If he is not assured of that, he is willing to move on. The 28-year-old’s contract is due to expire in 10 months time and Arsenal will need to make a decision soon.
Villa’s bid of £20m could be the most they can get out of him. Mikel Arteta will have a difficult decision to make when the Premier League season kicks off this weekend at Craven Cottage.
