Arsenal Consider Signing Out-Of-Favour Alphonse Areola

Arsenal are reportedly looking at French goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola.

He is currently out of sorts with both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, failing to impress on his loan spell to the Galacticos.

There have been a number of goalkeeper names that have popped up with links to Arsenal this past week. Barcelona’s Neto is a viable option since he is struggling to make the grade at Camp Nou as well. The Catalan outfit spent over £23m to sign him last summer and might not be willing to let him go for anything less.

That would be a ridiculous amount of money for Arsenal to spend on a backup keeper. Bernd Leno has been prolific all season and is their outright number one choice. If Areola or Neto were to make the switch over to the Emirates, they will only be offered a second-string spot behind the German. It is unlikely that Areola would opt for that option now.

The real question lies in how bad has Emiliano Martinez been for the Gunners. He graduated from the club’s academy to spend several seasons out on loan. Picking up a considerable bit of experience, the Argentine has been fairly decent in his first full season with Arsenal. He stood out during the FA Cup tie against Leeds, making some key saves to help his team to a 1-0 victory.

Sure, he still needs to perfect his craft but Martinez has done enough to claim the number two spot for himself. And it seems quite unwise of Arsenal to spent that sort of cash on backup players when they are struggling to improve the first team.
