With Arsenal knocked out of the Europa League last week, Paul Merson has foreseen a terrible financial future for the Gunners.
Until next season, if Arsenal cannot play in Europe, it could spell bad news for them. That’s precisely why Arteta has been told to sell off one player to save them from falling into serious financial trouble.
Since the first four teams get to qualify for the Champions League, Arsenal is still 8 points behind the 4th placed team, which is Chelsea currently. However, the Gunners have only won 8 out of 27 matches in the season. If they want to replace Chelsea in the fouth position, Arsenal will have to go on a winning streak of sorts, so it seems.
However, there is a ray of hope. If Manchester City does get banned from Champions League for the next two years, Arsenal could overcome 5th placed Manchester United, since they are only 5 points away.
Merson has suggested giving away centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and has said that Sokratis doesn’t have much of a future at Arsenal.
Arsenal could also be selling Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi this summer.
The new signings Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares have cost them a bit, and will cost even more if Arsenal makes a permanent contract with them.
Arsenal is also trying for the Europa League, but they’ll have to battle Wolves, Sheffield United and Burnley in between. If they fail to qualify for any Europe competition, the Gunners will lie in a loss of £40million, hence best to offload some players.
