Stephan Lichtsteiner insists he might not extend his current Arsenal contract which is set to expire at the end of this season.
The experienced right back was the first ever signing of the Unai Emery era as he was brought in from Juventus on a free transfer and inked a one year deal at the Emirates stadium.
Hector Bellerin’s untimed injury opened up a huge window of opportunity for the 35 year old but the veteran defender has failed to put in the required athleticism and Emery has had to seek the assistance of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Carl Jenkinson to keep things under control.
Despite his limited ability, the right back has featured in 21 games in all competitions and talks for a new improved deal have already taken place. But the Swiss international only wants to sign on the dotted line if he is assured of regular game time.
“This will need time. The fact that I play at a top club at the age of 35 says enough. There have been talks [with Arsenal]. We have to see if it suits both sides.
“Arsenal is a big club, I feel very happy. But I want to play regularly with regard to the European Championships.
“It was okay this year. But if the coach says that he no longer counts on me, I have to worry.”
