Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu agrees new contract at Emirates Stadium
Arsenal’s defensive line receives a boost as Takehiro Tomiyasu, the versatile full-back, has reportedly inked a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.
The agreement, as reported by TEAMtalk, is poised to be finalized upon Tomiyasu’s return from the Asian Cup later this month.
“Negotiations are advancing very well,” Fabrizio Romano said a few weeks ago.
“There is still something to clarify in terms of the structure of the new deal, but Tomiyasu wants to stay.
“We heard some rumours from Italy, saying Napoli, Roma and AC Milan are interested. It’s true that many Italian clubs were considering a move on loan for Tomiyasu.
“But Arsenal were very clear in their message because they said there was no chance of Tomiyasu leaving.”
Amidst recent successes in contract extensions, Arsenal continues to solidify its roster for the long term. The Gunners have been proactive in securing key talents like William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli, and Bukayo Saka to lengthy contracts, marking a departure from past tendencies of allowing players to enter the final year of their deals.
With Tomiyasu set to follow suit, Arsenal fans can expect the continuation of this positive trend. The Japanese international, praised by teammate Ben White as ‘world-class’, is held in high regard by manager Mikel Arteta, who considers him a pivotal squad member.
Tomiyasu’s existing contract, which includes an optional year, runs until 2025. Since joining Arsenal three years ago, he has made 73 appearances for the club, including 20 in the current season.
Despite interest from Napoli during the January transfer window, Arteta’s valuation of Tomiyasu ensured that any potential move failed to materialize, highlighting the significance of the defender’s role within the team’s plans.
