Arsenal end Julian Alvarez interest after star rejects swap deal for Barcelona

Arsenal have officially ended their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez after learning that the Argentine international only wants to join Barcelona this summer.

The Gunners had identified the 26-year-old as a primary transfer target following their first Premier League title victory in 22 years.

Mikel Arteta remains determined to strengthen his attacking options ahead of next season, but Alvarez’s clear preference for a move to the Camp Nou has forced Arsenal to abandon their interest.

Atletico Madrid have already rejected an opening bid of €100 million (£86.4m) from Barcelona, with the Spanish club furious over what they consider a disrespectful public pursuit of their star player.

The La Liga champions have attempted to convince Alvarez to consider Arsenal as an alternative destination.

In a bid to facilitate a transfer, Atletico proposed a swap deal that would see Alvarez join Arsenal in exchange for €60 million (£51.7m) plus Viktor Gyokeres.

However, the former Manchester City forward has firmly rejected any move to North London.

Alvarez broke his silence this week regarding his future, telling reporters after Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria:

“I spoke with the people I needed to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”

According to SPORT, Arsenal have now completely ruled out a move for the World Cup winner and will shift their attention to other targets.

The Gunners have already turned their focus to Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi, who impressed during his first Premier League season following a £10 million move from Lorient.

The French forward scored 13 goals for the Cherries and has attracted interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG, and Bayern Munich.

Recent reports suggest any club hoping to secure Kroupi’s signature will need to pay around €100 million (£86m).

Paris Saint-Germain have also previously discussed a move for Alvarez but face the same obstacle regarding the player’s Barcelona preference.

With Alvarez determined to join Barcelona, Arsenal must now pursue alternative options as they look to build on their historic league triumph and compete in the Champions League next season.
