Arsenal are reportedly tracking Borussia Mönchengladbach defender, Matthias Ginter along with arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs are known to have scouted Ginter previously, prior to his move to Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund. The 25-year-old defender strapped up 102 times for BVB over the course of 3 seasons and scored 4 goals.
He also has 23 caps to his name for the German national side along with a 2016 Olympic silver medal. He has made 17 appearances so far this season and has a contract till the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
Arsenal’s previous defensive addition from the Bundesliga, Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been somewhat rewarding. While the Gunners currently do hold the worst defensive record amongst the top six Premier League sides, the Greek international has been their best player from the back.
With injuries suffered by Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin, Unai Emery is seriously understaffed in the centre-back position. Shkodran Mustafi’s performances have been distinctly poor and should be enough to see him out of the Emirates soon.
Calum Chambers is spending the season out on loan with Fulham but he is yet to prove himself as a dependable figure for a club like Arsenal. Bringing in a proven figure like Ginter is highly necessary for the Gunners to keep matching strides with England’s elite teams.
They have been the victims of far too many defensive shortcomings to not address the situation head-on next term.
