Arsenal’s hopes of signing Gary Cahill this January has been demolished as latest reports claim that the defender will be seeing out the remainder of his contract with Chelsea.
Unai Emery was thought to be on the 33-year-old’s tail for a defensive addition before the transfer deadline.
The Gunners have been particularly unimpressive on the defensive end this season, letting in an obscene tally of 33 goals in 24 Premier League matches. To add to their woes both Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Laurent Koscielny picked up long term injuries in the 1-3 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last Friday.
Emery somehow managed to hold the line against Cardiff City with a 2-1 victory. Nacho Monreal slotted in at centre-back next to a careless Shkodran Mustafi. The Gunners are destined to be without Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin as well for the remainder of the season.
Chelsea were open to Cahill’s loan agreement but only if the club offers to pay all of his wages. The 33-year-old earns £130,000 per week and has a contract till June 2019.
Arsenal are already struggling to keep up with the wage bill they have gathered at the Emirates, accommodating Mesut Ozil’s £350,000-per-week deal along with new recruits like Denis Suarez, Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner.
Emery along with Crystal Palace and Fulham have deferred from their interests to sign the expensive centre-back.
