Arsenal genuinely wanted to buy Arda Guler from Real Madrid before two significant events stood in the way, according to Fabrizio Romano. Although the highly regarded Turkey international appeared to be a very intriguing possibility, he had a difficult start to life at the Bernabeu and saw little playing time.
Guler is currently playing more frequently for Real Madrid, and it appears that Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement by Xabi Alonso was crucial to this development. According to Romano’s most recent YouTube video upload, Arsenal’s interest appears to have waned after Andrea Berta was appointed as the Gunners’ new sports director.
According to Romano, there was a team in October or November of 2024 that was ready to strike if Carlo Ancelotti remained at Real Madrid for the current campaign and if Real Madrid could provide Arda Güler with a way out.
Since Arda Güler always wanted to play for Real Madrid, he said, “a club was preparing an attack to try to get him before Xabi Alonso arrived and closed every single door for this possibility, as the player also did in recent years.”
Romano continues by saying that despite having internal discussions over the possible move, Arsenal never even initiated club-to-club negotiations over the deal because of such changes. As previously stated, Güler is now a starter under Xabi Alonso and has been in the starting lineup for Real Madrid in each of the team’s opening three games of the new season.
He has three victories, one goal, and one assist, so it doesn’t seem likely that he will lose his position on the club very soon. Since Mesut Özil and Martin Odegaard, two gifted midfielders, joined and assumed significant responsibilities in north London, Arsenal has clearly had success recruiting from Real Madrid.
Maybe during his tenure with the Gunners, Dani Ceballos wasn’t quite as much praised. However, at least his transfers to Arsenal were only temporary, costing the team hardly more than his salary. Guler’s transfer no longer seems likely, despite Arsenal’s obvious desire to make him the next player to follow in his footsteps last winter.
