According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are currently in tough with Andre Onana’s representatives.
Mikel Arteta wants to bring in the Ajax star this summer as a part of his future plans.
Currently serving a doping ban set by UEFA, Onana services could be acquired for well below the market price. The goalkeeper is not allowed to even train with his current outfit and set to miss all professional fixtures until November.
Onana’s contract is also due to end in a year’s time and he has no wish to extend. Arsenal could wrap up a deal for around £7m or less but there are other outfits interested in him. The 25-year-old gained prominence after leaving Barcelona for Ajax five years ago.
Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Romano said: “They are in touch with the agent. They like the player, he’s a serious opportunity but it’s not advanced or closed yet so now Arsenal will talk with people close to Onana, with his agent, to understand the situation. But, it’s not done yet.”
Onana is viewed as an upgrade to Bernd Leno due to his varied passing range. Playing with his feet is what Leno struggles with and it is considered a serious disadvantage in Arteta’s system.
