Lyon midfielder, Guimaraes is due to have a medical at Newcastle United this week. The Magpies are said to have negotiated a fee of £33 million for the Brazilian playmaker. Edu, the Gunners’ top executive, has a long-standing interest in Guimaraes, but he must now move on.
Edu, according to the Express, is relying on another Brazilian, Douglas Luiz. He is also a fan of Luiz and is ‘likely’ to increase his pursuit of the Villa enforcer between now and the end of the month according to Birmingham Live.
According to the article, Arsenal were interested in signing Luiz over the summer, while Roma were also believed to be exploring a move of their own.
Luiz’s contract with Villa expires in 2023.
And manager Steven Gerrard recently put a stop to rumours that the 23-year-old will be departing Villa Park.
However, with Arsenal in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, a hefty offer for Luiz may be tough to refuse.
Arsenal have been looking to improve their midfield ranks since the conclusion of last season and will now be forced to go elsewhere, with their prospects of signing Guimaraes dwindling by the second.
The north Londoners are now said to be gearing up to rekindle their interest before the mid-season window slams shut on Monday evening.
