The Athletic reports that in order to make up for the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, Arsenal is probably going to let go of forward Eddie Nketiah. Over the previous few weeks, Merino and the Gunners have been frequently connected, and they have now started negotiations with Sociedad to acquire his services.

The Athletic claims that a big departure in the next few days may be necessary for the move, although Sporting director Edu Gaspar is presently in Spain to facilitate the agreement. After reaching a wide agreement with Fulham for Emile Smith Rowe’s departure, Arsenal moved on with the signing of Riccardo Calafiori. Merino’s situation may also have the same outcome. Preceding the end of this month’s transfer window, Nketiah may clear the way for Merino’s signing.

Arsenal to complete major sale before signing Mikel Merino

Arsenal and the 28-year-old midfielder from Real Sociedad have reached a personal terms agreement. There is a four-year agreement in place. At first, Real Sociedad had wanted to hold onto Martin Zubimendi, a target for Liverpool, as well as Merino. They seem to have managed to stymie Liverpool’s pursuit of Zubimendi, but they won’t have the same luck with Merino.

Since the 28-cap Spain international is nearing the end of his San Sebastian contract, Real Sociedad has little leverage in negotiations. Merino has been extended a new contract and a pay increase by the club. The conditions that Arsenal and Merino have agreed upon, though, are reportedly significantly more profitable than what Merino would get from Real Sociedad if he signed a better contract.
