Arsenal finished 6th in the Premier League last season, 37 points behind the champions Manchester City. As a result they will again miss the Champions League this season after missing last year as well.
Unai Emery was appointed as club’s new manager back in May after Arsene Wenger decided to leave the club after 22 years at the end of the season. He signed a three-year deal worth £15 million.
The Spaniard was given the charge with the task of returning the club to the European elite while challenging for other major honours. It has been a busy transfer for the Premier League giants, as the new boss has brought in new five players, reinforcing the particular areas which needed strengthening.
Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria, Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient, Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen, Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund and Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus.
However the 46 year old has quickly come in for Criticism after 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday.
The Gunners’ transfer dealings ahead of this season have been considered mixed. While Torreira and Guendouzi offer potential, some have questioned the logic of bringing in Papastathopoulos and Lichtsteiner, who are 30 and 34 respectively.
But club’s legend Ian Wright has come in support of Emery and feels he will need atleast 4 transfer windows to transform the club.
Speaking to Ominsport as quoted by Goal, Wright said: “Unai Emery needs at least, if we’re talking transfer window terms, he needs at least three or four transfer windows. So, if that means two seasons, then give him two seasons.
“I think that we’ve had a manager for 20-odd years, and he was magnificent for us, and now we’ve got a manager who’s come in who has got pedigree.
“He’s good enough to be that manager who can go to the next level. So why not give him time to do that?
“Give him the time to try and implement his style of play that he wants. Whether that means he’s got the players already or he’s going to have to bring them in throughout three or maybe four transfer windows, I believe he should get that and we should judge him then.”
