The possibility of Arsenal negotiating a deal to capture Morgan Rogers, a midfielder for Aston Villa, seems to have been ruined, hurting the Gunners’ chances. Arsenal was mentioned as a potential suitor for the gifted Rogers when the summer transfer window opened a month ago.

Villa acquired the 22-year-old from Championship team Middlesbrough for almost £15 million, and their hunches have paid off as he has rapidly established himself as a Premier League star. Halfway through the 2024–25 season, Rogers made his senior England debut and finished with 14 goals and 15 assists in 54 matches overall.

Since Villa was not able to make it to the Champions League the next season, there were inevitably rumors that they would join a team like Arsenal, which would be able to provide that higher level of competition more frequently.

The scenario was linked to the Midlands club’s intense concerns of violating the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) before tonight’s deadline. Even if it were a last choice, they would make enough pure profit from the sale of a local player like Rogers to ease these concerns.

As negotiations to sell their women’s team continue, Villa has discovered that they would not have to sell Rogers to Arsenal or anybody else for that matter.

According to the Telegraph, Villa would be allowed to include this sale, which is valued at around £55 million, in their 2024–2025 financial statements as long as a preliminary agreement is reached by the end of play on June 30 and can be finalized in the first few days of July.

Upon the resetting of the Premier League’s accounting period overnight, Villa will have accomplished their goal of staying within the green lines.

The fact that the selling club is under no pressure whatsoever and the midfield player is bound by a contract that expires in 2030 makes it an uphill battle, but it does not completely rule out a possible deal for Arsenal to sign Rogers.

Although Rodrygo and Nico Williams were once connected to Mikel Arteta’s team, deals involving the two players are becoming less plausible. But Villa won’t allow one of their best forwards to go for pennies on the dollar, and they’ll probably ask for more than £70 million.
