Italian news outlet, Calcio Mercato states in a very brief report that FC Basel defender, Eray Comert admires Arsenal. Daily Mail has also drawn links between the Gunners and the 21-year-old centre-back.
Comert is a product of the Basel youth academy, having joined the side when he was only 11. He broke through to the senior side in 2016 and has racked up 23 appearances this term along with 2 goals.
He has spent time with Lugano and FC Sion developing his trade. Comert has also represented Switzerland at various youth levels ranging from the U16s all the way up to the U20s.
Standing at 6 feet tall, he has the build to succeed at an elite level but he might have to pick up more experience first. Arsenal desperately need to add strength to the centre-half spot but Unai Emery could use someone who can offer more than the Basel player.
The Gunners get upstaged on the defensive end on a nightly basis which has significantly reduced their chances of making it into the top four of the Premier League this season. While the campaign is not yet over, it is obvious which players Emery should be targeting for the upcoming summer window.
But then again, given Arsenal’s meagre transfer budget of only £45m one can hardly expect the likes of Matthijs de Ligt or Dayot Upamecano or Raphael Varane simply walk in through the club’s doors.
Comert fills into the bracket of ‘potential’ but not ‘revolutionary’ in the list of Arsenal transfer targets.
