Reports suggest that Arsenal can take a complete u-turn on the defender and sell somebody else instead.
Mikel Arteta already has plenty of options to choose from next season in Pablo Mari, David Luiz, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi and Holding. Calum Chambers is also due to return from injury by the end of this year. Surely, more one of the faces is expected to leave the Emirates this summer and it might not be Holding.
Initially, it made complete sense to loan Holding out. He would receive regular minutes at Newcastle and finally be able to get some rhythm going at the back. If he proves himself well, he could come back and replace David Luiz at the heart of the Arsenal defence. If not, he could be sold for a higher fee than right now.
However, if Arsenal are making ground on other deals, Holding could be kept on as a strong cover. Mikel Arteta will be aiming for multiple trophies this season and a top-four finish. With a much tighter season schedule, all teams will need a depth of players to tackle multiple competitions.
Holding’s situation is definitely quite confusing. At 25, he has not quite fulfilled the potential he showed early on in his career and he really is not high on Arteta’s books. A loan spell would have done him some good instead of playing sporadically in a back-three.
