Arsenal face competition with Man City and Man United for Premier League midfielder

Arsenal have entered the initial stages of negotiations to sign Brazilian centre‑back Alexsandro, age 25, from Ligue 1 side Lille, according to Brazilian media outlet UOL.

Arsenal Open Preliminary Talks to Sign Lille Defender Alexsandro

Arsenal scouts were present at Sao Paulo’s Neo Química Arena on June 10, monitoring Alexsandro as he delivered commanding defensive performances in Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers—starting in a clean sheet draw with Ecuador and a 1–0 victory over Paraguay.

Serie A champions Napoli are also reported to have made an approach, intensifying competition.

Alexsandro was handed his first Brazil call‑up by coach Carlo Ancelotti on May 26, 2025. In just his first two starts, he quickly demonstrated maturity and tactical awareness, anchoring a Brazil back‑three effectively.

At Lille, he helped the team secure a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 and a return to European competition.

Born in Duque de Caxias and raised in Rio de Janeiro’s Dique II favela, Alexsandro supported his family by collecting recyclables before his talent was spotted in Portugal.

After stints at Praiense and Amora in Portugal’s lower leagues, he rose through the ranks at Chaves to earn a €2 million move to Lille in 2022.

Alexsandro’s journey reflects resilience, as he now aspires to continue his rise with a move to a top-tier club—and possibly the 2026 World Cup.

When asked about his future, Alexsandro stated:

“It depends on [Lille president] Olivier Letang. I am calm and not in any rush to leave. He will decide my future.”

He also praised Lille manager Bruno Genesio:

“He helps me a lot off the pitch … He has a good heart. He is a great coach.”

With talks at a preliminary stage, clubs are expected to soon submit formal bids.

Arsenal see Alexsandro as a young, proven defender capable of fortifying their rearguard, while Napoli’s interest could spark a bidding contest.

If a move materialises, Alexsandro would step onto the Premier League stage at Arsenal—bringing his blend of gritty backstory and burgeoning international pedigree.

Fans will be watching closely as both clubs sharpen their pursuit, with Lille poised to command a return on their €2 million investment.
