The former Chelsea midfielder has been heavily linked with a return to Brazil this summer. Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has admitted that he would consider moving to Brazil once he leaves the club. The 33-year-old has played more than 50 times at the senior international level for Italy but was born and raised in Brazil before moving to Europe as a teenager.
He is out of contract with Arsenal in June and will leave the Gunners as a free agent in the summer if an agreement for him to stay on at the Emirates Stadium is not reached. Brazilian top-flight club Flamengo was interested in signing Jorginho in January. While Arsenal were unwilling to enter into a deal then, they remain keen on the ex-Chelsea man ahead of the summer.
When Flamengo defeated Fluminense to win the Campeonato Carioca title last weekend, Jorginho’s agent was in the stands. According to Jorginho, he and his spouse are merely on vacation during the international break, even if they are now in Rio de Janeiro.
“I don’t think I was left out.” However, Jorginho told ESPN Brasil, “I’m interested to see what it’s like to play in Brazil and to experience it today.” Following rumors that Jorginho would be offered a three-year contract worth approximately £8 million, Flamengo’s sporting director, José Boto, stated that he is waiting for Jorginho to decide whether to sign with the team.
In the Premier League, Jorginho has already shown his abilities, but he must now move on. A team like Arsenal would no longer be able to start him. We’ll have to wait and see if he can swiftly adjust to Brazilian football and start contributing for Flamengo.
The ability of Arsenal to adequately replace him at the end of the season will be interesting to watch. The midfielder Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad has been linked to them. For the former Chelsea vice-captain, the Spanish international might be the perfect substitute. For Jorginho, he might also prove to be a significant improvement.
