The Major League Soccer outfit are looking at the German as their star replacement for Derby bound Wayne Rooney. The latter is due to complete the current season with United and then sign with the Rams in January.
DC United would ideally like to sign Ozil during the winter break but the attacking midfielder is hesitant to an immediate move. The Washington Post reports that there is more to the player’s transfer than just his playing rights.
The American club is also interested in acquiring franchise rights to Ozil’s popular coffee chain, 39 Steps To Coffee. The Arsenal midfielder owns several outlets across London and DC United are looking open to open a branch at Audi Field.
As plenty of earlier reports would suggest, Arsenal are open to selling Ozil this season. It has been Unai Emery’s goal for some time now, to get the 30-year-old and his giant contract, off the club’s wage books.
Incident it is his massive salary package that has deterred other clubs from signing him off, even on a short loan spell. Rooney’s departure for Derby will open up a significant amount of next season’s salary budget for DC with which they plan to accommodate Ozil.
