According to the Guardian, Arsenal only paid £5m upfront for Gabriel Magalhaes.
A total of £25m was agreed upon with Lille for the Brazilian centre-back and he has proved to be an excellent addition.
Fans are already singing the praises of Gabriel after he quite deservedly won Arsenal’s Player of the Month for September. Three man-of-the-match performances summed up just how stellar of a start Gabriel has had to life in England.
Napoli were heavily interested in the 22-year-old but it was Arsenal who ended up winning his signature. Many predict that his signing could look like a bargain deal in years to come. But the most spectacular fact is that the defender’s acquisition was completed for such a low fee upfront.
Arsenal have carried out a similar deal with Lille over the transfer of Nicolas Pepe the summer prior. The total fee of £72m was to be spread out across four seasons. The same seems to have been applied on the Gabriel deal where £5m paid right now and the rest spread out across the next three summers.
If true, this can be classified as a master move by Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta. Fans are well aware of the financial constraints the club are running through and this will definitely help the club in the current scenario.
