After getting close to luring Mikel Merino to the Emirates Stadium, Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao has been identified as manager Mikel Arteta’s top target. Arsenal has set their sights on making an aggressive late move for Williams, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.

With the £42 million transfer of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and the impending completion of another deal before the August 30 deadline, the Gunners have demonstrated that they are not afraid to spend big money in their pursuit of a Premier League championship.

As the summer transfer season draws to a close, sporting director Edu has been instructed by Arteta to keep trying to bolster the team. Merino is headed to Arsenal following the agreement in principle worth an initial £28.4 million that was made with Real Sociedad earlier this week.

Ever since the summer transfer market began, Arsenal had their eye on Nico Williams. With his impressive results at Euro 2024, the Spain international’s stock reached new heights as he enjoyed a fantastic 2023–24 La Liga season.

Though Williams is being watched by several other teams, including Chelsea and Barcelona, Arsenal has been strongly linked to an attempt to sign the winger. Several weeks ago, Barca appeared to be the front-runners to sign him, but that agreement fell through, and Dani Olmo was signed in his place.
