According to the Portuguese tabloid Mais Futebol, Arsenal is preparing a second bid for Sporting Lisbon attacker Viktor Gyokeres that would exceed €70 million (£60 million). After apparently having their initial approach rejected, the Gunners are still adamant about signing the Sweden international and are currently preparing a better bid to outbid their Premier League rivals for his services.
The 26-year-old striker is also being considered by Manchester United, who hope to bring him back to manager Ruben Amorim, who saw Gyokeres develop into one of Europe’s best forwards during his two seasons at Sporting.
It is anticipated that Arsenal’s second offer will be more in line with Sporting president Frederico Varandas’ assessment of Gyokeres, whose initial offer was reportedly worth about €65 million (£55 million), including add-ons.
Given their great relationship with Arsenal, Sporting is still open to a new round of negotiations about the Sweden international, and Gyokeres’ camp is “optimistic” that this time around the negotiations will go well.
As an option to Gyokeres, Arsenal is rumored to be negotiating a move for RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko, although they have not yet determined their main striker target.
Sporting was not going to demand the £84 million (€100 million) release clause at the end of the season, especially since he would be 27. We were aware of Viktor’s desire to join a team where he could compete for the Champions League, and we are sensible.
Gyokeres has not taken well to the Portuguese champions’ alleged demand for at least £67.4 million (€80 million). Much of the discussion that is going on right now is untrue. “When the time is right, I will speak,” he posted in an Instagram story.
Gyokeres and his agent were criticized by Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, on Wednesday for rumors that a transfer fee had been decided upon before the summer transfer season.
“There is a lot of talk at the moment; most of it is false,” Gyokeres wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday night, seemingly responding to the accusations. I’ll talk when it’s appropriate.
