Arsenal have initiated formal talks to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with new sporting director Andrea Berta leading the charge to secure the prolific Sweden ahead of the summer transfer window.
Viktor Gyokeres Transfer Update: Arsenal in Pole Position After Talks Open
Gyokeres, 26, has enjoyed a sensational season in Portugal, netting 52 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions.
His goal-scoring prowess has propelled Sporting to the top of the Primeira Liga and positioned him as a leading contender for the European Golden Boot, potentially becoming the first player outside Europe’s top five leagues to win the award since 2002.
Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres is driven by a pressing need to bolster their attacking options.
With Gabriel Jesus struggling with injuries and Kai Havertz often deployed out of position, manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add a natural number nine to his squad.
Gyökeres’ combination of physicality, technical skill, and clinical finishing makes him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s attacking philosophy.
The Gunners are reportedly preparing a substantial offer for Gyökeres, with Sporting CP’s asking price believed to be in the region of £58.5 million.
This fee is considered more attainable compared to other targets, such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, whose valuation could prove prohibitive.
Andrea Berta, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in March, is said to be a strong advocate for Gyokeres and is working diligently to finalize the deal.
The Swedish international is reportedly open to a move to North London, especially given Arsenal’s qualification for the Champions League next season.
While Gyokeres has remained non-committal about his future, stating in April, “No one can predict what will happen, we enjoy the moment,” the ongoing negotiations suggest a transfer could be on the horizon.
Should Arsenal secure Gyökeres’ signature, it would mark a significant statement of intent as they aim to challenge for major honors in the upcoming season
