According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are willing to listen to offers for their £35m signing from Valencia, Shkodran Mustafi.
The German defender was signed by Arsene Wenger in 2016 and the move has ended up costing the Gunners more than they had bargained for. Mustafi has performed very poorly this season and the last to drop behind Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the pecking order.
Fans were enraged this past term to witness some of his idiosyncrasies in the heart of the Arsenal’s defence but Unai Emery still chose to give the 26-year-old a chance to redeem himself this season.
Not only has Mustafi been as deficient in his responsibilities at the back, it seems like he has deteriorated further. Although he alone cannot be blamed for Arsenal’s 3-1 loss against Manchester City last weekend, the German did play a huge role in it.
Selling Mustafi could raise Emery’s £40m allowance for next summer although the Spanish manager will have to look for more than just one replacement. Even without the 26-year-old, Arsenal’s backline is heavily depleted.
Rob Holding’s return date has not been set yet with Laurent Koscielny turning 34 this year. Konstantinos Mavropanos is still in the midst of his development phase and could more minutes on the pitch to really prove himself as a starting figure.
