With Atalanta gaining ground on a possible replacement, Arsenal target Ademola Lookman may be moving this summer. The 27-year-old has been linked to a move outside of Italy, with Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle all considering a move.
Lookman previously played in the Premier League for Leicester, Fulham, and Everton. However, his time with Atalanta has been the most fruitful; his hat trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final stands out as a particularly memorable moment.
It was revealed earlier this month that Bayern Munich had shown interest in Gabriel Martinelli, suggesting that the Gunners would need a successor this summer. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze have been mentioned as wingers who Mikel Arteta has been considering signing.
But according to a recent transfer from Atalanta, Arteta might be planning a move for Lookman. The 23-year-old Kamaldeen Sulemana, a left winger, has reportedly agreed to a deal with Southampton, according to The Athletic, which could jeopardize Lookman’s position in the squad.
Lookman contributed 27 goals during his successful 2023–24 season at Atalanta. During the Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen, he made headlines with a spectacular hat trick.
With 20 goals and seven assists at the club level last season, the Charlton Athletic graduate repeated his feats. It is now expected that he will leave Bergamo to take on a more difficult task.
Lookman’s previous Premier League experiences with Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham were forgettable; in 96 games, he only registered 11 goals and six assists.
He could nevertheless wish to make amends. Given Lookman’s versatility in the final third, Arsenal’s interest in a deal is not surprising. He might be viewed as a left-wing option by the Gunners in particular. Given that he typically prefers to cut inside from the left wing, the position would be ideal for him.
If the team is unable to acquire the desired names on their wishlist, Lookman can be a backup target. Rodrygo of Real Madrid appears to be the top pick right now, followed by Eze of Palace. If Arsenal is unable to sign one of the two, a trade for Lookman may be pursued.
