Real Sociedad and Arsenal have come to an agreement for Mikel Merino, a star midfield player. The Spanish international was negotiating to stay in San Sebastian with La Real, but it appears he will be moving on. Since there has been no progress in extending Merino’s current contract in the Basque Country, the club has accepted its impending departure in 2025.
In order to prevent a free transfer, exit the following summer, Real Sociedad is expected to accept a proposal worth approximately €30 million that the Gunners have reportedly put forward. The Daily Mirror has reported that Arsenal has entered into advanced negotiations after reaching a personal terms agreement with Merino’s representation. After Arsenal’s preseason tour of the USA, they are back in the UK; therefore, the transfer may be completed in the next few days.
When trying to get the best deals, Arsenal is aware of the agony of overspending and underpaying. The window of opportunity is narrower, particularly for individuals who are in their prime years. Undoubtedly, a particular set of guidelines, but also proof that Arsenal is determined not to make the same mistakes again.
Given the progress of a deal for Mikel Merino, that clock may very well be reset in the upcoming weeks. An estimated £25 million will be spent on him. It is not a large sum of money for a player who just won Euro 2024 and has participated frequently in European competitions since 2018. Merino’s contract with Real Sociedad is ending in a year, but even so, the price seems reasonable.
