The 27-year-old, who has not played since the opening-day win over Manchester United on August 17, missed training earlier this week due to a minor issue.

White had returned to the matchday squad for Arsenal’s recent Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest, raising hopes of his availability.

However, his absence from full training has cast doubt on his involvement for the crucial European fixture.

Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the defensive concern, stating, “Gabi [Jesus], Kai [Havertz], Ben, and Martin [Ødegaard] are still out, unfortunately”.

The injury compounds Arsenal’s selection woes, with captain Martin Ødegaard (shoulder), Bukayo Saka, and forwards Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus also sidelined.

Arteta acknowledged the limited options but expressed confidence in his squad’s depth, highlighting alternatives like midfielder Mikel Merino or Leandro Trossard to fill attacking roles if needed.

Academy midfielder Max Dowman is expected to join the matchday squad, while goalkeeper Tommy Setford will travel as third-choice option.

However, summer signing Demiane Agustien remains ineligible for Champions League selection due to registration rules.

Arteta emphasized the need for adaptability, saying, “We have other options and formations to adjust. Viktor [Gyokeres] is doing really well, so I’m happy with that”.

White’s continued absence follows a pattern of fitness issues that have disrupted his start to the season, leaving Arsenal’s defensive plans in flux ahead of their trip to Bilbao.

The Gunners begin their Champions League campaign at San Mames on Wednesday, with Arteta hoping for a swift recovery for his key defenders amid a crowded fixture schedule.
