Arsenal target and Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has been told that he will have the “pick of any club he wants” next summer. It’s great news for the Gunners.
The North London club were heavily linked with Tielemans in the summer but they were unwilling to meet Leicester’s £30m asking price.
Instead, the midfielder looks likely to leave the Foxes for free next year. His contract will expire in June.
Tielemans has been a star player for the Premier League side for a few seasons but he could have easily let his form dip this season after he did not get a big move elsewhere.
They have endured a tough start to the new season but their recent upturn in results have seen them rise up to 14th in the table.
Leicester have won three of their past four games in the Premier League and their latest win came against Everton. Tielemans scored a stunning opener in the win at Goodison Park.
Ex-Premier League striker Jermain Defoe was impressed by Tielemans’ performance against Frank Lampard’s side.
“Technically he is so good, players like that, when you have better players around you, it makes you better. He’s just a top player,” Defoe told Premier League Productions.
“It’s the Scholey one – Scholes and Beckham used to do it. It’s so difficult, he makes it look so easy to hit it the first time and keep it down.
“He’s in the strongest position ever (regarding who he may sign for). How he is performing now, then Leicester need to try to get him signed.
“But it will be a pick of any club he wants in the summer. There is no pressure on him and see what happens in the summer.”
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers recently insisted that he “would love” Tielemans to pen a new contract as he is “wonderful to work with”.
“In terms of fitness he’s been okay, hasn’t he? I think he’s played a lot of the games,” Rodgers said.
“He’s been a fantastic professional for us and even though he’s in the situation with his contract, he’s never wavered from his mentality and what he gives to the team. Youri provides the team with great know-how in the game, a wonderful player to work with.
“Like I said I will just continue to work and develop his game whilst he’s here for however long that is. I would love him to sign another deal and continue his journey here at Leicester City. But we will see in the coming months.”
