According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Arsenal could look to sign a winger who is also capable of playing through the middle in the winter transfer window.
The North London club is expected to be in the market for attacking reinforcements in January, especially as star striker Gabriel Jesus is set for an extended period on the sidelines following knee surgery.
ESPN claimed last month that the Gunners are ‘keen on adding a central midfielder and a winger’ if possible next month with the club’s owners ready to back a bid for the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta was asked about the chances of bringing in an alternative to the Brazil international in January, the 40-year-old tactician admitted that Arsenal ‘will look at the options’.
“Where it affects us is who we are as a team, because he gives us so much,” Arteta said.
“So, what we can do after that, when we know a little bit the timescale and when we can have him back, we will look at the options, and try to make the right decision.”
Sheth admits that a versatile player could be at the top of Arsenal’s wish list, though, especially as they tried to sign Raphinha from Leeds over the summer.
He told GiveMeSport: “Remember, during the summer, they tried to bring in Raphinha, so they wanted to strengthen the forward line not necessarily bring in a striker.
“Maybe they will continue on that vein and think, ‘right, we still want to strengthen the forward line, let’s go in for a winger who maybe can play in the centre as well.’
“Someone who can play in both positions as Gabriel Jesus can do, though we do know that he is basically their number nine.”
Fabrizio Romano recently revealed in a column for CaughtOffside that Joao Felix is ‘open to leaving’ Atletico Madrid as ‘there are tensions with Diego Simeone’.
