The midfielder is set to join the Gunners

Arsenal endured an underwhelming season as they failed to win any silverware in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign. They finished 6th in the Premier League, reached the Carabao Cup final and the Europa League semi-final.

Unai Emery has been appointed as the new manager of the Gunners and is charged with the task of returning the club to the European elite while challenging for major honours.

The Spaniard is expected to be busy in the summer transfer window in order to strengthen the squad for next season.

One of the key areas the Gunners need to resolve is their midfield, Santi Cazaorla have left the club after his contract expired, Jack Wilshere likely to leave the club on a free agent and Aaron Ramsey’s future is still uncertain as he could be sold in order to raise funds which leaves them short in that area.

Arsenal are on the verge of signing Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria for £26.4 million according to Guardian. They have now exceeded Torreira’s release clause in order to beat Napoli to the signing and will complete the deal imminently.

The Premier League club have offered him a five-year deal and are confident that he will sign it.

The 22 year old has become a key player at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and is ranked among the best defensive midfielders in the league. He has one Uruguay cap and was included in the World Cup squad for the tournament in Russia this summer.

The midfielder has been praised by his national teammate Luis Suarez, who has been following him.

“We played Sampdoria once,” said Suarez. “I was surprised by the young lad who had been in the middle of the park for the whole match.

“After that evening, I learned he was Uruguayan, and from that moment, I started to follow him a bit in Serie A.

“He surprised me, he’s improved a lot and been playing at a very high level.

“He came on the scene at a very young age, when it’s not at all easy to assert yourself, but he succeeded in performing at a high level.”

The midfielder has been linked to many clubs

Arsenal midfielder’s Jack Wilshere has been linked with a move away from the Emirates as he is yet to commit to a new contract at the Emirates Stadium. He will become a free agent at the end of the month when his contract expires and could leave on a free transfer.

Wilshere, who has been at the club since 9, has made it clear that his preferred option is to stay at his boyhood club even before Arsene Wenger retired. The Frenchman has also expressed his desire to keep him at the club beyond this summer.

The 26 year old has been offered a new deal but would have to take a 25 per cent pay-cut on his £120,000-a-week wages but he is unhappy with the incentivised deal being offered.

The England International have already been linked to host of clubs like Serie A champions Juventus and Premier League new boys Wolves. There were even reports that the Turin side have offered him a 4 year contract.

He has also been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and his representative offered him to the Ligue 1 champions. But it is highly unlikely that Thomas Tuchel will make a move for him.

It had been previously reported that newly appointed manager Unai Emery was keen to sign him up to a new deal, but the player himself wanted assurances over his role and game time.

The Gunners already have Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka in the midfield and are close to signing of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria which would create even more competition.

Wilshere recently dropped a huge hint that his Arsenal career may be over. He took to Instagram to provide an update on the situation.

The English midfielder posted the following in big bold letters as quoted by Metro: “There comes a time when you have to choose between turning the page and closing the book.”

Unai Emery is looking to bolster his squad for next season

Arsenal endured an underwhelming season as they failed to win any silverware in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign. They finished 6th in the Premier League, reached the Carabao Cup final and the Europa League semi-final.

Unai Emery has been appointed as the new manager of the Gunners and is charged with the task of returning the club to the European elite while challenging for major honours.

The Spaniard is expected to be busy in the summer transfer window in order to strengthen the squad for next season. He has been told by the club’s board he will have to operate under a restricted transfer budget of £50 million during his first summer in charge at the Emirates.

Despite limits on what they can spend, the Premier League giants have already completed the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer.  They have wasted little time having struck a deal to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira for £26 million.

Arsenal are also eyeing moves for Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno and Portugal international Gelson Martins, according to Sky Sports.

They have been handed a major boost after top target Martins terminated his contract with Sporting Lisbon. He is considered one of the biggest talents of Portugal in the last few years.

The 23 year old was a regular for the club last season, scoring 11 goals and assisting 9 in 47 appearances. His displays attracted attention from many top clubs.

There were reports earlier that the former PSG boss was interested in signing the winger as a long term replacement for Alexis Sanchez and was preparing a bid for him. But now could sign him on a free transfer, who would usually command a fee of around £30 million.

Peter Cech and David Ospina both struggled last season and the club have made signing a world class goalkeeper their priority this summer.

Leno has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league over the past few seasons. The English side are in advance talks with him and he is expected to cost around £25 million.

The German struggled to perform last season

Arsenal endured an underwhelming season as they failed to win any silverware in Arsene Wenger’s final campaign. They finished 6th in the Premier League, reached the Carabao Cup final and the Europa League semi-final.

Despite limits on what they can spend, the Premier League giants have already completed the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer.  They have wasted little time having struck a deal to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira for £26 million.

Reports in Germany suggesting there is also an agreement to bring Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno to north London and Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is also expected to be confirmed in July for a reported fee of £16 million.

But the English side may have to sell their few players this summer in order to fund for further signings. According to the Evening Standard, Shkordan Mustafi is one name in contention to leave under the new regime.

The defender joined Arsenal for a reported fee to be in excess of £35 million in 2016. He started off brilliantly and was looking like a bargain signing.

The Germany International was a regular starter last season, starting 38 games in all competitions but endured a troublesome campaign. His subsequent regression has been alarming and is considered one of the weak links in their defense.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has doubts over the 26 year old and new manager is in the market for another centre-back.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles made his first team breakthrough last season

Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles has signed a new long-term contract at the club, reports The Sun. He will wear number 15 rather than 30 next season.

The 20 year old has been at the club since the age of 9 became the Gunners’ second-youngest Champions League debutante in December 2014, aged just 17. He made his Premier League debut 4 days later before joining Ipswich on a season long loan in the following season.

He made a first team breakthrough under Arsene Wenger last season, managing to make 28 appearances in all competitions across the midfield and defense. A versatile operator, he was deployed at left-back, left midfield and central midfield during the past season.

The youngster has also been capped by England at several youth levels, making four appearances for the Under-21s. He also played a key role in the Three Lions’ Under-20 World Cup-winning campaign in 2017, and has captained his country at that age group.

Niles claimed earlier that he felt lucky to be given a chance at a huge club like Arsenal. He said: “I do feel fortunate. I have been given the opportunity and I have to thank everyone who has backed me.

“But I’d like to see more academy players in the Premier League. There are not a lot of youth academy products and English boys in the Premier League.”

He will continue his development under new manager Unai Emery and expected to feature in club’s pre-season friendly matches, where they will face Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.

The Spaniard is expected to be busy in the summer transfer window in order to strengthen the squad for next season and has already completed the signing of Stephan Lichsteiner on a free transfer from Juventus.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman believes the clubs need to make at least 3 more summer signings in order to return to the top 4 and be more competitive.

The ex-England international told Omnisport as quoted by Goal: “You’ve got to progress on the season before and we were out of the top four and we were getting left behind by quite a few of the big clubs.

“We need to regroup, have a little restructure of the team and then push on, get into the Champions League again and try and improve on that each season.

“It’s not going to be easy because the big guns are quite a way ahead at the moment. We need steel in the team.

“We need a couple of defenders, dominant defenders, and a dominant midfield player.

“I think the forward side of it, you can leave that alone because we’ve got a lot of firepower there. I’m just a little bit worried about the defence and the art of defending.”

The club have already been linked to host of midfielders and defenders, while they are also trying to tie Aaron Ramsey down to a new contract.
