Transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport, Arsenal are ‘waiting to see if there’s an opportunity’ to lure Atletico Madrid star Matheus Cunha to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, but boss Mikel Arteta could bolster his squad when the winter window opens for business next month.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal are weighing up whether to enter the race to sign Cunha after Gabriel Jesus suffered a long-term injury at the World Cup.
Arteta is assessing his options after the Brazilian was forced to undergo a knee operation earlier this month, but the Gunners are facing stiff competition for Jesus’ fellow countryman.
Wolverhampton Wanderers want to seal a double deal which would see Cunha and Atletico teammate Felipe head to Molineux next month.
Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery is also keen on the striker and, as a result, Jones has previously confirmed to GiveMeSport that Aston Villa have held talks over acquiring his services.
Everton and Leeds United are also long-term admirers of Cunha, while Chelsea have been offered the chance to land him.
Jones told GiveMeSport: “If you’re Arsenal and looking to make the right decisions that define a title challenge, nothing can be dismissed or given up on lightly. That’s why they’ll have their eye on situations like this one.
“They’re biding their time is how I would read it. They’re waiting to see if there’s an opportunity here.”
It has been an underwhelming season for Cunha as, according to Transfermarkt, he has failed to get his name on the scoresheet in 17 appearances.
The 23-year-old’s profligacy led to him missing out on a place in the Brazil squad which headed to Qatar for the World Cup.
Jesus’ injury has left Arteta short of options and Cunha may prove to be a shrewd investment.
