According to reports, Arsenal has chosen to pursue Bruno Guimaraes, a midfielder for Newcastle United, as the Magpies are allegedly pricing the Londoners out of a move for Alexander Isak. Despite a 2-2 tie with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night, Mikel Arteta’s team advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after winning the first leg 7-1.
The next round will see the Gunners take on Real Madrid, but supporters are already looking to the summer transfer window in hopes of strengthening the team’s offensive line. Isak of Newcastle has often been linked to a move to the Emirates, but it is unlikely that any team will sign the striker given that the Toon are reputedly asking for more than £100 million for him.
Edu Gaspar is apparently going to be replaced as Arsenal’s transfer guru by the former sporting director of Atletico Madrid. The Spanish publication AS also asserts that Berta is prepared to make a spectacular arrival in London by acquiring Guimaraes, a great midfielder for Newcastle.
Although the Magpies are reportedly unwilling to discuss a sale for the 27-year-old, Football Insider claims that the Londoners could make a move for Newcastle midfielder Guimaraes.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta eyes transfer of €85m
As for the Magpies captain, Berta has always admired Guimaraes, going all the way back to his days at Atletico Madrid, when he made several unsuccessful attempts to sign him. He views the Brazilian, who is valued at €85 million on TransferMarkt, as the perfect addition to Arteta’s team in his new position at Arsenal.
According to the source, Guimaraes is content in Newcastle and views it as his second home, but he would contemplate a move if it would give him a realistic chance to win a trophy. If Newcastle doesn’t make it to the Champions League the next season, they supposedly have an unofficial deal in place to let him go for about €60 million.
With Newcastle playing Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final this Sunday at Wembley, the Brazilian midfielder is nevertheless focused on wrapping up the season strongly and possibly leaving St. James’ Park with a trophy.
Guimaraes is reportedly a major fan of new Arsenal manager Berta, who made three attempts to sign him while he was at Atletico. Additionally, he has already informed the Samba star’s agents that Guimaraes is in the top spot on Arsenal’s summer shopping list.
