According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson is ‘back in the frame again’ following his impressive performance against Nottingham Forest.
The 22-year-old hasn’t been so regular at Gunners in recent years but could now be set to feature prominently in Mikel Arteta’s plans for the remainder of the campaign.
Nelson’s £15,000-per-week contract will expire next summer, and he believed following the Forest game that earning fresh terms at his boyhood club is his goal at this moment in time.
“I only have some months left on my contract. Getting a new deal would be amazing and I would love to commit to the club,” said the former England Under-21 international.
“Any opportunity I get I’m going to try and take and just do my very best and just keep helping the team really.”
Nelson replaced fellow Arsenal academy graduate Bukayo Saka after just 27 minutes in the 5-0 victory over Forest and went on to register two goals and an assist in the comprehensive win.
In an interview with GiveMeSport, Sheth said: “He’s back in the frame again.
“And to come on for someone like Saka where the crowd would have been really, really worried about how long Saka is out for, and particularly even for that game, and then to come on and score two goals, I think it would have appeased a lot of people.
“Because I think there is a player in there that Arsenal obviously haven’t seen enough of, and I think whenever he’s been out on loan and played well, a lot of the Arsenal fans have said, ‘let’s give this kid a chance because he’s got something’.”
Nelson first showcased his top-class potential during a season-long loan spell with Hoffenheim back in 2018/19 where he scored seven goals and one assist in 23 German top-flight appearances.
The flying winger then revived his stuttering career at Feyenoord last season, scoring 11 goal in 32 outings for the Dutch outfit, helping them reach the Europa Conference League final.
