Ethan Nwaneri, a future Arsenal star, has decided to remain with the team despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester City
When Nwaneri entered the game as a late substitution in the Gunners’ 3-0 victory over Brentford in September, he broke the record for the youngest player in Premier League history. He was only 15 years and 181 days old and one of the nation’s top prospects at the time. The attacking midfielder’s schoolboy registration was set to expire at 12 a.m. on Friday, but he has since reached an agreement with Arsenal over a scholarship.
Nwaneri, who can sign professional terms when he turns 17, is reportedly in negotiations with the Gunners, with sporting director Edu, first-team manager Mikel Arteta, and academy manager Per Mertesacker all taking part. Nwaneri’s route to the first team has also been planned out by Arsenal. After making his debut, the 16-year-old has trained with the adults and was also flown to Dubai for a midseason training camp in December.
On Friday, Arsenal will attempt to sign all of their future pupils, and young midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly will also remain. They are also trying very hard to have the winger Reiss Nelson’s contract negotiations concluded.
Although there is hope that Nelson will stay at Arsenal once his current contract expires on June 30, negotiations regarding his future may go beyond that date. Despite interest from clubs in England and overseas, Arteta is believed to have played a significant role in negotiations and in trying to convince Nelson to stay.
Nelson is among the Arsenal players who are currently on vacation; however, they are scheduled to resume preseason workouts the following week. Their homecoming will be spaced out, with those who served overseas earlier in the month likely receiving a longer gap.
