In a crushing 5-1 victory over Bolivia on Saturday night, Gabriel made his international debut, playing 85 minutes. This match was a 2026 World Cup qualifier. Despite the easy score, the centre back was engaged in a physical battle throughout the match and even took a knee to the chest from Diego Ibanez in the fifth minute.
The Gunners star was eventually replaced for the final few minutes by Roger Ibanez of Al Ahli.
Gabriel was seen with an ice pack on his leg during those latter minutes, which led Arsenal supporters to assume that their center-back had been injured.
Arsenal would be severely lacking options in defence if Gabriel had an issue, considering the team is already playing without Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber due to injuries. Partey has experienced groyne pain, while recent acquisition Timber is expected to miss the majority of the season due to an ACL injury.
After being relegated to the bench for the first few games of the season, Gabriel was reinstated into the Arsenal starting lineup in the victory over Manchester United. The defender didn’t provide any details on the alleged injury when he commented on his Brazil debut on Instagram following the game: Only God knows how long I’ve been waiting for this.
